The Yorkshire and Humber region is one of the most important regions for medical technology in the UK, with over 300 companies and a significant proportion of the UK medical device manufacturers operating within the region

  • Total employment in the region in Healthcare Technology Industries is around 10,000 people and the GVA generated is £0.5 billion.
  • Assistive Technologies, Diagnostics and Dental Equipment manufacturers pose strong potential growth opportunities in the region, particularly when linked to the regions engineering and metals/materials industries.
  • The region's strengths in the pharmaceutical industry are in the novel drug development and biotechnology, as well as manufacturing, which in turn are linked to a strong presence of the chemicals industry in West Yorkshire and the Humber.
  • The region has seen investments in large scientific technology parks, such as the 500,000 sq ft of office accommodation and incubation space at the Vangarde Science Park, currently under construction in York.

Partnerships between universities such as the White Rose Consortium (connecting Leeds, Sheffield and York) provide a global gateway for organisations seeking to take advantage of research and development capacity.
