Cash and carry success for local cheese maker - 25/09/08

Cheese company Shepherds Purse, based in Thirsk, has secured a deal with cash and carry giant Makro.

A former cottage industry which began life operating on a family farm, Shepherds Purse will now supply cheese to over 30 Makro cash and carry stores across the country, in a six-figure deal with the firm.

The company already lists Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose among its supermarket clients, as well as supplying an assortment of pubs and airlines, and the Wimbledon tennis championship.

Judy Bell, chief executive of Shepherds Purse Cheeses, said: "We are delighted to have secured our first contract in the cash and carry sector to supply our cheeses in 750g pack sizes aimed at the hotel, catering, trade and commercial business sector."

Shepherds Purse will sell five of its traditional cheeses alongside the range of 350 brands that Makro already sells and which originate from the UK and further afield in Europe.

Darlington & Stockton Times reports that the Yorkshire-based Swaledale Cheese Company recently won the top prize at the Great Taste Awards.
