Italian engineers trained by Sheffield sports scientist - 15/02/08
Italian engineers are to be coached by a leading sports scientist from Sheffield Hallam University.
The Rome Institute of Engineering has invited Professor Steve Haake, who as well as working at the university is also the technical director of SportsPulse, to highlight how technology can develop sports equipment.
Professor Haake and his team gained international recognition after analysing the science behind David Beckham's famous free kicks.
He will open the Institution of Engineering and Technology's European Lecture Tour, which rounds-off in Sheffield on July 15th.
"The use of science and technology is a relatively recent addition to the world of sport. Lots of money and effort is spent on developing sport and athletes to make sure that they perform at the highest level," explained Steve.
He added: "With it being an Olympic year and the UEFA European Championships this summer, it's a perfect opportunity to talk about the relationship between science and sport."
In his address he will highlight how sports science has helped to support top sports men and women.
An insight into the fundamental mechanics of an athlete's interaction with sports equipment will also be given.
His talk will be aimed at those with an interest in sport or technology and the physics will be understandable to those in secondary or higher education.
