Thirsk cheese maker scoops coveted award - 18/01/08
An artisan cheese maker in Thirsk has scooped a coveted award for its best-selling cheese.
Shepherds Purse of Thirsk has been awarded the Gold Award for its Yorkshire Blue Cheese in the Caterers Group's Excellence in Food and Drink Awards 2007.
Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine embarks on a search for the best food products to grace the nation's kitchens each year, seeking out quality products for their readers.
Shepherd's Purse was recognised for its excellence in the cheese, dairy and milk product category.
Judges of the award were particularly impressed by the cheese maker's "outstanding entry" which they felt "no other entry could match".
This year's annual search was the Caterer Group attracted more entries from local and regional products than ever before, representing the surge in customer interest and the importance of provenance of the food on our plates.
Such products, says North Yorkshire Local Food, are also being increasingly represented on restaurant menus adding an "extra dimension" to the dining experience.
