?30,000 eco-log cabin opens in York - 20/12/07
A new ?30,000 eco-log cabin has opened in York this week to provide young skaters and youth leaders in the area with a shelter.
The eco-log is located at the Zoo Skate Park and has been funded by York city council with help from the Yorkash Fund and the European Youth initiative.
Ivan Milner, from the council's Youth Service, said: "The cabin is the new flagship for the new sustainable direction in which the youth service is traveling.
"It is used as a 'chill-out area' as well as an educational and information-based provision for the young people who attend the skate park and is needed to cater for and address their personal, educational and social needs."
The eco-log features self-harvesting rain water, a log-burning stove and heater, solar panels, a composting toilet, air flush urinals, a small garden when young people can grow their own produce and a recycling programme.
Each year the Zoo Skate Park caters for around 200 young people across the city and receives over 6,000 recorded visits annually.
