Findings demonstrate strength of regions higher education sector - 07/07/2008

Yorkshire’s universities provide a ‘powerhouse of research and expertise’ for businesses, generating an impressive £2.8 billion to the region, according to new research.
The findings, revealed by Yorkshire Universities, highlight the importance of the higher education sector in advancing the region’s businesses. Companies frequently tap into the universities’ world-class knowledge and expertise - whose research has achieved the highest grading for almost 100 subject areas - to meet the demands of a global market place.
With access to a vast range of cutting-edge technology, facilities and services, businesses are able to harness the technical expertise of the world-leading R&D facilities. In particular, the region’s Centres of Industrial Collaboration help to connect industry and academia. Each centre draws on the specific expertise of one or more of the region’s universities where a keen commercial focus translates cutting-edge thinking into competitive advantage.
In addition, the universities contribute extensively to the Region’s workforce, producing 55,000 graduates each year, including 12% of the UK’s graduates in language and related subjects – providing the region’s businesses with access to multi-lingual staff.
Professor Michael Arthur, chair of Yorkshire Universities and vice-chancellor of the University of Leeds said: “Yorkshire’s universities represent a powerhouse of research and expertise.
“They have the strength and diversity to ensure that higher education continues to make a significant impact on the region’s economic, social and technological future.”
