New flights expand extensive business network

Yorkshire’s extensive transport links have been strengthened further with the news this month of two new direct flights from the region – to Pakistan and Egypt.

From 2 July 2008, Pakistan International Airlines will operate two direct flights per week from Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBIA) to Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.

Flights from LBIA to Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt will commence in February 2009.

The new routes will further increase the reach of the region’s impressive air transport network, which already offers fast and efficient global connections to over 25 million customers within two hours. LBIA – together with the region’s two other international airports – ensures that businesses in the region can access fast and efficient global connections to over 70 different destinations in 28 countries.

Additionally, Yorkshire boasts exceptional road, rail and sea links, providing a gateway to 370 million customers in Europe. The Humber Ports of Goole, Grimsby, Immingham and Hull constitute the largest ports complex in the country – handling over 78 million tonnes of freight a year. Fifty-three countries are serviced by the region’s ports, including nations in South America, North America and the Far East; and the fast overnight crossings mean that hauliers can drive nine hours into mainland Europe within their time allowances.

Commenting on the new flights, Tony Hallwood, commercial and aviation development director at LBIA said: “It is excellent news for Bradford and the entire Yorkshire region that we serve, confirming that Leeds Bradford International Airport is Yorkshire’s premier international gateway.”
