Swedish giant strengthens global position with Sheffield acquisition

Swedish materials and engineering giant Sandvik has bought Sheffield-based orthopaedic instruments and implants company Eurocut – the second largest global manufacturer of specialist orthopaedic tooling.

Eurocut’s customers comprise leading medical technology companies that sell directly to hospitals and medical clinics, with the firm’s medical division is involved in many design projects, with some of the world’s leading orthopaedic companies. Following the buyout, Eurocut has become part of Sandvik Medical Solutions, making it  an even stronger player in the medical instrumentation contract manufacturing sector as a result of the acquisition.

Peter Gossas, president of Sandvik Materials Technology said: “The acquisition is in line with our long-term ambition to be a strategic partner within the area and a complete supplier to globally leading medical technology companies. The addition of Eurocut Ltd. broadens our product program, expands our capacity and strengthens our expertise within machining and production of medical instruments and implants.”

The Yorkshire region has an exceptional concentration of orthopaedic companies and is a major centre for clinical research, with one of the largest Orthopaedic Engineering Research groups in Europe, based at the University of Leeds.

Sandvik acquired another Yorkshire firm – Doncasters Medical Technologies – in June 2007.
