Yorkshire cities rank as some of the best in Europe - 17/04/2008

Three of Yorkshire’s cities have been ranked in the top 50 European cities for business according to the Financial Times and fDi magazine.
Overall, Leeds was placed 20th in the top 50 European cities, while Sheffield was placed 33rd and Bradford 40th in the European Cities and Regions of the Future 2008/09 awards.
More than 1,000 cities and regions across Europe battled for a ranking in the official index by the Financial Times and fDi magazine. The judging criteria takes into account 75 indicators of locations’ attractiveness for investment and business potential.
This includes factors such as ‘ease of doing business’, ‘global competitiveness’, ‘most qualified staff’, ‘number of science and technology graduates’, ‘cost of calls to the US’, ‘external transport links’ and ‘capital investment by business’ are all taken into account.
In separate categories, Bradford was placed sixth in the ‘top 10 small European cities’, while Leeds and Sheffield were placed third and fifth respectively in the ‘top large European cities’. Barnsley was named as the seventh best city in the ‘top 10 micro European cities’.
