World-leader to open manufacturing facility in Sheffield - 17/04/2008

One of the world’s leading healthcare companies is opening a new state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in South Yorkshire.
Sheffield-based B. Braun Medical is building the region’s first outsourcing unit to manufacture and deliver sterile prescription drugs to hospitals.
The unit, which will be located at the company’s Thorncliffe Park headquarters, will service any hospital in the UK and will feature production and delivery of time-sensitive drugs for cancer treatments to anywhere in a two-hour radius of the facility. Yorkshire and Humber’s excellent transport links ensure that Sheffield is the ideal location for such a facility.
Part of the unit will feature a robotic cytotoxic drug preparation facility for the creation of drugs used in cancer treatment – only the second in the UK. The robotic technology will be able to manufacture approximately 80% of the cytotoxic drug range that B. Braun will be processing, offering high levels of standardisation and substantial safeguards from the pharmaceutical ingredients that make up cytotoxic drugs, which are toxic and hazardous to handle.
Hans Hux, group chief executive of B. Braun in the UK, said: “This initiative will play a fundamental role in securing a continuation in the rapid growth of the B. Braun group in the UK, and it also reinforces our commitment to providing new services and employment opportunities in South Yorkshire.
