International engineering giant returns to multi-million pound Yorkshire base - 17/04/2008

An international engineering giant which started life in Sheffield is returning to its roots to set up a multi-million pound UK base.
Dormer Tools – one of the world’s largest producers of solid carbide and high speed steel cutting tools – is investing in a new 20,000 sq ft facility at the groundbreaking Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) on the boundary of Sheffield and Rotherham.
Part of the Swedish-based Sandvik Group, Dormer has operations in more than 40 countries and employs approximately 1,300 people.
The AMP is a £40m, 40ha world-class manufacturing technology park specialising in cutting edge, high value advanced engineering and material research supplying world leaders in aerospace and automotive industries through to medical devices, oil and gas.
Technology developed on the AMP is already being utilised in leading edge projects, such as within Formula One and the next generation of military and commercial aircraft, including the Boeing 787. Dormer’s investment will see this continue, with a new research and development facility established on the site, which in collaboration with the University of Sheffield, will see Dormer push back the boundaries of tool design and reinforce Yorkshire’s reputation as a world leader in engineering and metal cutting technology.
The new investment will also include a custom built training centre built to international standards and will establish Yorkshire as the base for all Dormer’s global corporate operations such as IT, sales and Marketing and product management.
Commenting on the award, Nick Garner, managing director at Dormer Tools said: “This is a significant achievement for the company. It is another major step forward in ensuring Dormer Tools is working with some of the biggest names in engineering.”
