Multi-million pound investment to enhance excellence in regenerative medicine

A £10m academy that will train the next generation of multi-skilled scientists and engineers for regional industry is to be launched in Yorkshire in September 2008.

GRADTERM – the Graduate Academy for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine – will offer PhD students the chance to integrate their research and skills in life sciences with engineering and physical sciences.

The project is a partnership between the three world-class ‘White Rose Universities’, the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York, which together have a research spend comparable to Oxford or Cambridge.

GRADTERM director and deputy vice-chancellor at Leeds University, Professor John Fisher said: “Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering are huge growth areas and there’s a clear need to build academic capacity.

“There’s also a great demand from industry for well trained engineers and physical scientists with a broad range of skills and knowledge who can work in an interdisciplinary environment.”

The Academy will be financed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, which is providing £6m over a five-year period. Additional funding will be provided by each of the three White Rose Universities, the Higher Education Funding Council for England and contributions from regional industry partners involved in regenerative medicine and therapies.
