Materials Analysis and Research Services CIC
Metro Technologies makes and supplies SMT (surface mount technology) nozzles used in the manufacture of circuit boards for a vast range of electronic items. These include mobile phones and computers.
The company exports to 47 countries and in order to stand out from the competition, Metro Technologies wanted to initiate a culture change in the business. Instead of simply being a manufacturer, Metro Technologies wanted to be an innovative company, leading the field.
Metro Technologies approached the Materials Analysis and Research Services CIC with the aim of helping to improve design and manufacture of existing products, and expand their product range in current and new markets.
The challenge was to manufacture nozzles small enough, as electronic devices decrease in size and the components themselves shrink. Embarking on a strategy to seek technological solutions to this challenge, in every stage of the project, the CIC acted as translator, advisor, and test house for new technologies sourced by Metro Technologies.
Improved product quality has been achieved through the use of the Centre's electron microscopes to show Metro Technologies views of nozzles in previously unseen detail. The project culminated in the development of a new coating technology, Roxton™, for use on nozzles and other components. It is a unique hard coating system for aluminium alloys, which improves the hardness and wear resistance of aluminium. The raw material and machining costs of which are far lower than stainless steel which is currently used.
Working with the CIC has helped fast-track Metro Technologies towards its goal of becoming a design and innovation company. The company is now an approved vendor for the world's top ten electronic manufacturers.
