Ultra Electronics Holdings Plc
Wireless Technologies CIC
Ultra Electronics is a group of specialist businesses designing, manufacturing and supporting electronic and electromechanical systems, sub-systems and products for defence, security and aerospace applications worldwide. Over the past five years, all major international airports and airlines have embarked upon programmes to improve security and safety systems. There is a need for innovative approaches to address global security risks and protection against today's evolving threats and vulnerabilities.
Horizon is a dynamic aircraft and airport surveillance and security management system. It will allow operators to effectively share and disseminate incredible amounts of situational awareness information from a network of cameras and sensors throughout the aircraft. This information is not only stored in a "black box", but can, in an emergency, use various data links to ensure transmission seamlessly across boundaries to many different forces and agencies on the ground. To bring the project to fruition, the Wireless Technologies CIC's expertise in fixed, mobile and satellite communications was harnessed. Special use was made of its recently-established broadband lab, containing the latest equipment and measuring devices from leading manufacturers. This was to ensure compatibility across a wide range of wireless technologies.
The significant advantages of the Horizon concept have led to Ultra Electronics playing a leading role in the direction of the European Organisation for Civil Equipment (EUROCAE) Aeronautical Systems Security Working Group. While working with EUROCAE to create a European standard, Ultra Electronics and the Wireless Technologies CIC have also demonstrated a prototype with the final product expected on the market in 24 months. Horizon marks the company's entrance into the homeland securities market and will generate new income streams from the granting of licenses. It will also enhance Ultra Electronics reputation of delivering innovative solutions, giving the opportunity to access new markets and territories. The continued help of the Wireless Technologies CIC has enabled future developments to be investigated, including the adaptation of the system for railways, oil, maritime and land based security industries.
