Yorkshire and Humber offers your business access to world leading skills in the production of raw materials used for component manufacture in industries including; automotive, aerospace, medical and other areas where high quality, precision components are required.
The advanced engineering and manufacturing sector in the region encompasses the following key sectors.
Aerospace
The £22.67bn UK aerospace and automotive industry is the largest in the world outside the US. Yorkshire and Humber plays a key role in this national success through partnerships like Boeing and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.
This multi million pound partnership is based on working together to develop scientific knowledge, expertise and innovation between both parties.
There are over 5,000 people employed in the aerospace industry in Yorkshire & Humber, with most companies operating as suppliers of components to major assemblers.
Automotive
The UK’s automotive industry is a world leader in motorsport and engineering design, and attracts around 60% of Europe’s automotive inward investment.
The Yorkshire and Humber region is an important area for automotive component supply and engineering, in both the UK and Europe, with over 500 automotive suppliers employing around 13,500 people.
These companies are involved in the manufacture of base raw materials, door seals, bearings, mechanical products and clutches.
Medical
Yorkshire and Humber is home to the largest concentration of orthopedic and medical device companies in the UK, making it the leading centre nationally in the field of medical diagnostics.
Leading edge, advanced engineering technology facilities including TWI, Cti, Namtec, Factory of the Future and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, provide world leading engineering capability and materials research. And all this expertise is concentrated on one location – the Advanced Manufacturing Park.
The Precision Technologies CIC is at the forefront of micro and nanoscale metrology of medical device implants and is developing new, ultra-precision manufacturing capability for medical device manufacturers.
Energy
With numerous businesses working in the energy sector, the Yorkshire and Humber region generates 17% of the UK’s electricity. Building on the region’s strong engineering base, there is a significant cluster of equipment suppliers to the traditional oil and gas industry.
Regional utility companies are actively looking to develop new technology, working on projects involved in gasification and supercritical boiler technology. Both of which require extensive use of advanced engineering materials.
At the smaller end of the spectrum, the region is home to the only dedicated small-scale energy technology incubator in the UK Life-IC.
Companies associated with the incubator include hydrogen economy technology developers such as ITM Power, Adelan and Catal, micro-medium scale generation developers such as Disenco (micro-CHP), Beck Mickle Hydro and ITI Energy (gasification) and other specialist companies.
Product success for these companies is heavily dependent on the supply of new and novel material technologies.
