Key Cities
Yorkshire and Humber
In 2010 the World Bank ranked the UK as the best place in Europe for doing business and the fifth best place in the world. The Yorkshire and Humber region is located right in the centre of the United Kingdom, making it the perfect location for businesses looking to expand or relocate.
Our central UK location, halfway between the capitals of England (London) and Scotland (Edinburgh) means we have excellent motorway and rail routes running right across our region and over 50% of the UK’s manufacturing base is less than 2 hours drive away.
Yorkshire and Humber has become the UK’s centre for renewable technologies. The region is the world’s number 1 offshore wind market with the greatest wind electricity generation capacity in the world and has also been designated by the Government as the nation’s Low Carbon Economic Area (LCEA) for Carbon Capture and Storage in the UK.
The region is also home to the UK largest ports complex, giving easy access to the 27 member states of the European Union, the world's largest single market, with its population of nearly 500 million. This has meant that even in times of recent world wide difficulties, businesses based here have been able to proactively seek new markets to expand their customer base. Reports in mid 2010 show Yorkshire and Humber was coming out of recession at a faster rate than most other regions in the UK.
With a population of more than five million people - larger than the European countries of Scotland, Norway and Luxembourg – there is a large pool of highly skilled workers available for work. Our economy is worth £89 billion which is large enough to rank the region alongside the top 20% of the world’s national economies.
More than 300,000 businesses including over 1,900 foreign owned companies have made the Yorkshire and Humber region their home. Attracted by operating costs that are 20% lower than the national average and wages on up to 30% less than London, the region is not only cost effective but situated in a strategic position to take advantage of the UK’s and Europe’s extensive customer base.
Our cities are rated as some of the best locations to do business and have become the drivers of business growth throughout the region.
